Body Battery reads 38. Resting HR is normal, legs feel fine, intervals are on the calendar. Another morning: also 38, but resting HR is +8 bpm and stairs feel heavy. Same score, opposite decisions. Body Battery is Garmin’s 0–100 energy estimate from sleep/HRV recharge and daytime stress drain — not a lab measure of glycogen.

What Feeds the Score

  • Recharge: sleep and parasympathetic recovery (HRV-related)
  • Drain: stress score, workouts, caffeine/alcohol timing, illness, travel
  • Noise: wrist optical HR and sleep staging after poor fit or naps

Pair context with HRV for runners and Training Status. Keep easy days honest with the Zone 2 Calculator.

Worked Morning: Two Ways to Read 38

Athlete A: Battery 38, resting HR 52 (baseline 51), mood good, planned 5 × 3 min VO2. Decision: keep the session; treat Battery as a stress false positive (meetings/coffee). Athlete B: Battery 38, resting HR 60 (baseline 52), heavy legs after doubles. Decision: swap to 45 min Zone 2 or rest — multiple recovery flags aligned. Related: Zone 2, overtraining signs.

Expert Note

Do not veto every workout from a single low morning score after solid sleep and normal resting HR. Also distrust Battery the first 1–2 weeks on a new watch, after alcohol, and sometimes in race-week taper restlessness. Calorie tiles are not fitness truth either — see watch calorie accuracy.

When the Trend Matters

  • Multi-day trend down + rising resting HR + heavy legs → ease off
  • After travel, late nights, or illness — respect low scores 24–48 hours
  • Stacking long + strength — next-morning low Battery is informative

Baseline Beats Absolute Numbers

A “good” Battery is personal. Track your own baseline for two weeks. Many runners feel sharp above ~60–70 after sleep; below ~30 with symptoms warrants caution. Race week can look oddly low from restlessness — trust the taper plan more than a single morning tile.

Decision Rule

If Body Battery is low and resting HR is elevated or legs/mood are off, replace quality with Zone 2 or rest. If Battery is low but resting HR, sleep, and feel are normal, keep an easy or planned quality session and reassess tomorrow — do not let one tile override the whole plan.
