Fan bikes punish ego: first-buy sprint calories and sustainable round splits conflict every time. Calories climb when you stay smooth; they stall when you redline then die. RPM Is Your Pace
- Drive with legs first; arms finish — not the reverse
- Note cal/min at 55–65 vs 70–80 RPM on your machine
- Echo often feels heavier at the same RPM — don’t copy a friend’s Assault numbers
- Console calories ≠ watch calories — use the console for the WOD; the Calories Calculator is a rough daily aid
Numeric scenario: 2–3 min steady test averages 62 RPM and 14 cal/min. AMRAP with 12/10 cal buys: open at ~80–85% ≈ 11–12 cal/min (slightly slower RPM), last buy at 95–100%. If cal/min drops >15% mid-WOD, you opened too hot — drop ~5 RPM next round. Couplet example: 12/10 cal + 10 thrusters — if the bike forces thruster singles by round 3, the bike was too hot.
Leave the bike before legs lock so transitions to barbell/gymnastics stay clean. Negative-split cal buys when possible (see For Time). For engine context: engine conditioning, rowing pacing.
Decision rule: if the next movement loads legs (thrusters, squats, burpees), cap bike at a pace you can leave and still unbroken that movement; if the bike is the finish, you may surge the last 20–30%.
